UConn Locks Down Auriemma: 5-Year, $18.7 Million Extension for Legendary Coach

With UConn announcing on Tuesday that Geno Auriemma, its women’s basketball coach, has received a five-year deal, it appears that the coach will not be leaving anytime soon.

The five-year contract agreement with Auriemma expires in 2029 and is worth $18.7 million. It also gives Auriemma the chance to receive performance-based incentives in addition to further remuneration.

With 1,213 career wins, Auriemma is now ranked second in Division I college basketball history. He will begin his 40th season at the university next year. He holds the record with 11 national championship victories.

“I’d like to thank David Benedict, Radenka Maric and the University of Connecticut leadership for their trust in me and their commitment to the women’s basketball program,” said Auriemma, who turned 70 in March. “I still find it hard to believe that I’ve been at UConn for over half my life. I feel like there’s so much more that can be done, and will be done, and I’m excited to be the one to do it with my staff and my team. I’m probably as excited about these next few years as I’ve ever been over the last 40.”

In addition to his base pay of $400,000, he will be paid an additional $2.94 million for speaking, consulting, and media commitments for the 2024–2025 season. This amount will rise by $200,000 annually for the duration of the deal.

Auriemma has had 23 Final Four appearances and been named the AP Coach of the Year nine times. He has led six clubs to perfect seasons as a coach.
