The Ward Effect: How the Former Steeler Great Aims to Boost Arizona State’s Offensive Firepower
Hines Ward, a former standout player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has joined Arizona State as their wide receivers coach.
“I am truly honored to join Arizona State University football as wide receivers coach,” Ward said in a statement Sunday. “It’s an incredible opportunity to share my passion for the game with a group of talented young men and help them reach their full potential. The culture and energy here in the Valley is special, and I can’t wait to be part of it.”
Ra’Shaad Samples, who departed to take a position at Oregon as wide receivers coach and assistant head coach, is replaced by Ward.
From 1998 to 2011, Ward was a member of the Steelers, where he won two Super Bowls. After the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the 2005 Super Bowl, he was named MVP.
Throughout his career, Ward amassed 12,083 receiving yards and 85 touchdowns, earning him four invitations to the Pro Bowl. Following his playing career, he served as the receivers coach at Florida Atlantic, the offensive assistant for the New York Jets, and last season, the head coach of the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL.
